She now has access to her exhibit overnight, and often sleeps outside most nights which just further proves her independent spirit. This has prompted the expansion of the maternity habitat giving her more space to enjoy as she gets bigger. They are actively engaging the community in tree planting to decrease CO2 emissions and raise awareness. She has recently been given veggies in her diet and seems to especially enjoy carrots. Juno has become very adventurous and independent lately too, running and jumping up onto the large boulders giving her a different vantage point to look at her visitors. We continue to work on integrating her into our behavioural husbandry program that our adult bears participate in. Our local Toronto Zoo AAZK chapter has partnered with Symcor and have planted a total of 1,284 trees and plants with many more to come. She now lives in the outdoor polar maternity habitat within the Tundra Trek where she has plenty of space to run, play, climb and swim, where visitors can now join in watching her grow. We have been very fortunate to have staff participate in their Leadership Camp program in Churchill, which challenge participants to return home and promote conservation efforts for polar bears. Juno is now approaching the 40 kg mark and continues to grow with a diet consisting of formula, meat, kibble and fish.

Toronto Zoo has a long history working with Polar Bear International (PBI) on numerous fronts. She has also become much more confident in her pool and goes for a swim daily. Dr. Sterling is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Alberta. The Canadian landings on the Juno Beach Sector of the Normandy coast were one of the most successful operations carried out on D-Day, during World War II. Aurora gave birth to two polar bear cubs, but despite showing perfect maternal instincts, including attempting to nurse her cubs shortly after birth, our staff were saddened to discover that one of the cubs did not survive the first 24 hours. Another very important partnership is working with several universities and leading scientists like Dr. To celebrate, Juno received an ice cake with her favourite vegetables and fish, also featuring the Corporal image. At 10 months old, Juno continues to love her pool and is getting really confident in her swimming and diving skills. We hosted an early first bear-thday celebration for Juno on November 9, 2016 where the Canadian Army promoted her from Honorary Private to the prestigious ranking of Honorary Corporal. Toronto Zoo is also a very active player with Acres for the Atmosphere which is a zookeeper initiated program founded in 2009 between PBI, American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK) and Frontier North to help educate and raise awareness on the issues polar bears are facing in the wild like global warming. Meet Juno, our female polar bear cub born on November 11, 2015 to mom, Aurora and dad, Inukshuk.
